16x20x1 HVAC filter replacement guide

A practical guide to checking, choosing, and replacing a 16x20x1 home air filter.

WHAT TO KNOW

Start with fit.
Then build a routine.

Replace the filter on the schedule that fits your home, the system instructions, and the conditions around it. Homes with pets, construction dust, smoke, or allergy concerns may need more frequent checks.

Confirm the printed size and airflow direction before ordering.

Not sure about the size?Read the frame or slot label, then compare it with the filter you remove. If the fit or airflow is unclear, consult the equipment manual or an HVAC professional.
BEFORE YOU BUY

A four-point filter check

1. Match the printed size

Use 16 × 20 × 1 only when it matches the nominal size printed on the current filter or equipment label. Measure the slot if the fit has ever been loose or tight.

2. Confirm the depth

The final number is the filter depth. A 1-inch filter and a 4-inch media filter are not interchangeable, even when the first two dimensions match.

3. Check the supported MERV rating

A higher MERV number is not automatically better for every system. Follow the equipment manual so the filter captures particles without creating more resistance than the system supports.

4. Plan the next inspection

Check the filter monthly at first. Replace it when it is visibly loaded or when the filter or equipment manufacturer says it is due. Pets, smoke, dust, and heavy system use can shorten the interval.
