How to measure an HVAC air filter

The size printed on a filter is usually its nominal size. The filter's actual dimensions can be slightly smaller, so confirm both before ordering when the label is missing or the fit is uncertain.

STEP BY STEP

Measure once.
Order with confidence.

1. Turn the HVAC system off. Remove the current filter carefully so the fan does not pull dust into the system while the slot is open.

2. Read the printed size first. Look for three numbers in length × width × depth order, such as 16 × 25 × 1. This is the nominal size used for shopping.

3. Measure when the label is unclear. Measure the outside edges of the filter frame. If the old filter fit poorly, also measure the usable slot opening. Record the actual dimensions instead of rounding them.

4. Confirm depth and airflow direction. The third number is the depth. Note the arrow on the old filter so the replacement points toward the blower or air handler.

5. Compare both sets of dimensions. Match the nominal size and the manufacturer's listed actual dimensions. If they conflict with the equipment label or manual, follow the equipment instructions or ask an HVAC professional.

Nominal vs. actualA filter sold as 16 × 25 × 1 may measure slightly less than those numbers. That is normal. Use the printed nominal size for shopping, then confirm the listing's actual dimensions when fit matters.

Five details that prevent repeat guesswork

Nominal size

Copy the three-number size printed on the current filter or equipment label.

Actual dimensions

Record the measured frame and slot dimensions if the fit is loose, tight, or unclear.

Supported MERV rating

Use the equipment manual or professional guidance rather than assuming a higher rating is always better.

Location and quantity

Name each return grille or air-handler slot and note how many filters the system uses.

Installation date

Save the date when the new filter goes in so the next inspection is based on a real starting point.
